What is the DIGESA fumigation certificate?
The DIGESA fumigation certificate (General Directorate of Environmental Health and Food Safety) is the official document certifying that an establishment has undergone a pest control process carried out by an authorized company. In Peru, this certificate is mandatory for restaurants, hotels, food production plants, warehouses and health centers that want to operate with their health licenses up to date.
Without this certificate, many businesses in Lima risk fines from the municipality, temporary closure of the premises, or loss of their operating license. The good news is that obtaining it is simple if you hire a certified company like Fumiplagas Ecologi.
Which establishments need the certificate?
According to Peruvian regulations (Supreme Decree N° 031-2010-SA and Law N° 26842), the following types of establishments are required to have a valid certificate:
- Restaurants and food services: SUNAT and Lima municipalities require this document to renew the operating license.
- Hotels and lodging: MINCETUR audits accommodations to ensure they have periodic health controls.
- Food and beverage production plants: SENASA and INDECOPI may request it during inspections.
- Warehouses and distribution centers: Especially those handling food, pharmaceutical or textile products.
- Educational institutions: Schools and universities must present it to obtain a MINEDU license.
- Health centers and clinics: DIRIS Lima requires periodic fumigations in medical facilities.
How often is it renewed?
- Restaurants and industrial kitchens: Every 3 months (quarterly)
- Hotels and lodging: Every 6 months (biannual)
- Food warehouses: Every 3 to 6 months
- Offices and commercial premises: Annually
- Production plants: Usually monthly
What does the certified service include?
- Free prior inspection: We assess the level of infestation and identify critical points.
- Treatment application: We use food-grade insecticides approved by DIGESA.
- Post-fumigation waiting time: Generally 2 to 4 hours before resuming operations.
- Issuance of the official certificate: With all required information: fumigation company, DIGESA registration, pest type, products used and technician's signature.
- Prevention recommendations: A report with corrective measures to reduce the risk of reinfestation.
Consequences of not having the certificate
- Municipal fines: Lima municipalities issue fines during their enforcement operations.
- Temporary closure: In cases of active infestation or repeated non-compliance.
- Loss of operating license: Annual renewal usually requires a valid certificate.
- Reputational damage: A customer who spots a pest can post permanent negative reviews.
