Are there termites in Lima? More than you'd think
Many people in Lima believe termites are only a problem in the jungle or in old houses. Metropolitan Lima has a significant population of subterranean termites (Reticulitermes spp.) and drywood termites (Cryptotermes spp.), which affect both old homes and modern buildings.
Termites work from the inside out, invisibly, for months or years. By the time you notice the floor is hollow or the door no longer closes properly, the colony may have millions of individuals and the structural damage can be severe.
Types of termites in Lima
Subterranean termites
The most destructive type. They build colonies in the soil and create mud tunnels (galleries) to reach wood. They can attack beams, window frames, furniture and paper files. They are especially common in Ate, Santa Anita, Villa El Salvador and riverside areas.
Drywood termites
They don't need contact with soil. They infest dry wood directly: furniture, parquet floors, wooden ceilings and door frames. Common in Miraflores, San Isidro and Barranco.
Signs that you have termites
- Hollow-sounding wood: Tap it with your knuckles. If it sounds hollow, it may be infested.
- Mud tubes: Pencil-sized tubes on walls or foundations — the signature of subterranean termites.
- Fine sawdust (frass): Salt-sized granules near furniture or frames.
- Discarded wings: Clusters of transparent wings near windows or lights indicate a recent swarm.
- Doors and windows that won't close: Damaged wood warps.
- Bubbling paint: Termites generate internal moisture that lifts the paint.
Professional control methods
Chemical barrier (subterranean termites)
Termiticide is injected into the soil around and under the structure. The product has a transfer effect: termites carry it back to the colony, eliminating the entire colony, including the queen.
Direct injection (drywood termites)
Small holes are drilled into the wood and termiticide is injected directly, then sealed. Precise and doesn't require vacating the home for extended periods.
Bait system (baiting)
The most modern and eco-friendly method. Bait stations are strategically installed. Termites carry the bait back to the colony. It eliminates the entire colony in 1 to 3 months, without volatile chemicals.
Post-treatment prevention
- Don't place wood directly on the ground
- Remove logs and decaying wood near the home
- Keep wood painted or varnished
- Fix water leaks (moisture attracts subterranean termites)
- Annual preventive inspections
